Having ingested the Second Summer of Love's acid house good-vibery, Dirty Beatniks saw the inherent similarity to early-'80s underground breaks and decided to make the two walk down the aisle - even if it took a shotgun at their backs to do it. One One Seven in the Shade is a grubby, clattery, and wholly bestial record. But luckily, it hasn't yet come to terms with its influences. Album 1996 12 Songs. More By Dirty Beatniks. After a spate of remix work for Cujo, Ruby, and Akasha among others, the pair released their '96 debut album, 117 In The Shade, on Wall Of Sound. Hedonistic house heads went berserk for their dirty, disco-influenced beats and druggy, decadent lyrics. The Beatniks were an overnight success. 2000's Feedback appeared under the Beatniks moniker, although Neil produced nine of the eleven tracks alone. Vocali read more

The Dirty Beatniks' debut, ONE ONE SEVEN IN THE SHADE, pokes fun at Elvis with its short intro, then lays into the beats of "Don't Stop." This was the heyday of big beat, and those influences are all over this album: the thick beats, the 303s. But "Beatnik Bounce" has have a hint of cheeky disco in it, and "More Danger" starts off with some moody downtempo before the requisite hip-hop sample drops. The mix of Spanish guitar and blippery of "So Vou de Mulher" also pops out. The synth pads and mess of "Hypnotysin'" provides a nice atmosphere that's missing elsewhere, as does the unabashed funk of "Roger 'n' Andre" that shoots unexpectedly into outer space. But overall, this album doesn't have quite enough to lift it out of the pack. There are some bright spots here, but the album stays too much in the shade of the big beat era.
