Its a fascinating juxtaposition between the psychedelic jazz-rock of early embryonic Embryo and the embrace of ethnic music from around the world that characterized subsequent Embryo projects. It starts off with some tribal drumming, and moves onward into complex rhythms and lots of sax and flute solos and even a violin here and there. Very interesting to hear the original Embryo transforming into the second version and coming up with material rendered totally unlike the studio versions. This September 1971 recording documents: Hansi Fischer (flute), Christian Burchard (drums), Al Jones (guitar), Edgar Hofmann (sax, violin), Ralph Fischer (bass) playing four out of the six tracks from the then forthcoming EMBRYO'S RACHE, that's "Embryo's Revenge" to us.
So, we have the power of the OPAL incarnation with one Al Jones taking up the guitar role and Hansi Fischer fusing in his distinctive style previously heard in Xhol. It amounts to a fiery blend that fills-in what was originally seen to be a big step in the Embryo sound. This is that missing link, and it is full of surprises, culminating in a really spectacular 26 expansion of Spain Yes, Franco Finished (a title that's not so obviously significant these days) which is amongst the greatest of Embryo freak-outs. Extraordinary though to the end!
