The third Errorsmith release contains a selection of live recordings made between 2001 and 2003 in various clubs and concert venues like Ulraschall in Munich, WMF in Berlin or Empty Bottle in Chicago. Most of the tracks on this album are interpretations of classic disco and r'n'b songs. Digitally synthesized, distorted and filtered club music which goes far beyond its origin. Less abstract and much more dancefloor compatible than the two previous Errorsmith releases, this album relates closely to stuff from Smith n Hack and MMM, projects which Errorsmith is part of as well. To be honest, this album is quite a disappointment. I previously heard Errosmith on various compilations, and his productions were appealing and interesting, so I blindly purchase this album in a record shop without any doubts and even pre-listening... And it turns out to be quite a mess! 'Near Disco Dawn' is a collection of random live recordings extracts, but they all are very repetitive, boring and completely lifeless. They lack both any virtuosity and powerfulness of experimental/noise recordings and any grooviness at all (which would be necessary if we were to perceive those records as dance-oriented). No interesting tonal or frequency fluctuations too, the sound is very plastic and flat, of that straight-forward "computer line-out"-type, which we hate most of all in the generation of "laptop artists". Keeping in mind that a collection of live recordings would purportedly feature the BEST parts of his sets edited out, I may assume that Errorsmith live concerts are extremely boring. Basically it's all very repetative (but not meditative or trance-inducing at all) and boring squeaky noise-techno, for 40+ minutes non-stop. Luckily, I bought this CD for bargain price, or I would be infuriated even more.
