Horrendous mixes HM-2 sound with unique melody and solos creating memorable and terrific songwriting. Doing this would be a great disservice to a masterful album and you would obviously miss out on what will be one of 2012's best death metal albums, hands down. Cover art by Raul Gonzalez. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Subterranean Watchtower Studios. Philadelphias Horrendous were one such band that walked this line. At a time when metal was focused on being drab, downbeat, black and white, Horrendous looked to the more lively early 1990s for cues. Even the cover of their debut LP The Chills 2012 calls to mind the work of Dan Seagrave. So whats up with it Well, despite being a very American band, Horrendous take a European approach to death metal from the buzzsaw sound, the Martin van Drunen wailing approach to death metal vocals, to the more traditional melodies that bypass thrash and reach right back to the NWOBHM roots of this mu. Horrendous - The Chills review: A successful modern death metal release deriving formulas from the OSDM scene and adding a touch of Swedish seasonings. Horrendous executes a professional job, carrying the memory of notable Swedish Death Metal acts such as Dismember, Gorement, and Entombed. The cohesive factor of The Chills is of great note, which one can decipher by the close bond brothers Matt and Jamie Knox have. Surely they must have studied, practiced, and perfected the art of Swedish Old School Death Metal, also adding a touch of their own feel and originality. Released January 2, 2012. The Chills Tracklist. The Womb Lyrics. The Chills Q&A. There is enough structure to allow the rhythms to go from a galloping speed to a slow creeping, churning haze full of distortion without allowing any moments of awkwardness get in there like Ive heard from others in the past. Horrendous is one of the best death metal bands that Ive heard in a long time. For someone so fresh they definitely have clamped down on that old school metal vibe and have mastered it with no problem
