An American Tragedy is an opera in two acts composed by Tobias Picker, with a libretto by Gene Scheer. This was Picker's fourth opera, written four years after the debut of Thérèse Raquin also composed with Scheer. Based on the 1925 Theodore Dreiser novel, An American Tragedy, the opera was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, and premiered in New York City on December 2, 2005. Album 1982 32 Songs. Pensier profondo Live. James Morris, Richard Stilwell, José Carreras, James Levine & The Metropolitan Opera 's Musical Style. Puccini was the leading exponent of the genre of opera known as verismo Italian for realism. Verismo is characterised by a story rooted in real life rather than that of the gods or mythology, where the music and drama are seamlessly matched and often describe a story of passion and style was made popular by the success of Mascagnis Cavelleriarusticana 1890 and Leoncavallos Pagliacci1892. Although most of his works focused on tragedy the heroine dies in bohème and Butterfly, and in Tosca both the hero and heroine as well as their nemesis die, he also produced a popular comedy, Gianni Schicci. But while Puccini wrote the opera in Italy, the location for the action is Japan. The opera tells the tale of the teenage geisha Cio-Cio San and her doomed marriage to Pinkerton, an American naval lieutenant. Puccini skillfully imbues the score with a mix of east and West. Highlights include the glorious love duet that falls at the end of Act I and the ravishing and pathos-filled soprano solo Un Bel Di One Fine day, in which Butterfly steadfastly sings of her belief that Pinkerton will return to her. Pinkerton does indeed return but not to Butterfly. Instead, he is cruelly found to be. Mirella Freni is possibly the greatest ever Puccini heroine. The recordings are sumptuous if not perhaps quite matching her Decca versions of many of the arias. In those, of course she had the advantage of performing with Pavarotti but here she sings beautifully with Franco Bonisolli and the love duet from Butterfly is quite stunning.
