Sting's 'Symphonicities' finely balances old pop-rock tunes with Royal Philharmonic's classic sound - Sting's new album begins with a boo-boo so wounding, you wonder how it can possibly recover. Symphonicities means to re-imagine some of the star's best known songs with The Police, as well as those from his solo career, in collaboration with a full symphony orchestra namely The Royal Philharmonic. But the disc's kick-off number - a take on the Police's brisk and choppy Next To You - stumbles into one of the deepest pot-holes for. Symphonicities is the tenth studio album by English musician Sting, released on 13 July 2010 on Deutsche Grammophon. The album is a companion piece to the tour of the same name in which Sting, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, reinterprets some of his songs as classical symphonic compositions. By relying on his catalog, Sting wound up with an album that is pop, not classical, in structure, but the sound of Symphonicities is surely symphonic, with Next to You driven by sawing strings instead of buzzing guitars. Occasionally, this changes the impact of a song, but rarely does it alter its intent indeed, there are a handful of tunes, like Englishman in New York and When We Dance, that feel unaltered in this larger setting. Symphonicities features Sting's greatest hits reinterpreted with brand new orchestrations. In addition to 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,' highlights include fan-favorites culled from The Police songbook such as 'Roxanne' and 'Next To You,' as well as songs from Sting's enduring solo career including 'Englishman in New York,' 'I Burn for You,' and 'Why Should I Cry for You,' among others.
