Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of a musical family, with sons Branford and Wynton also becoming notable musicians. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Marsalis was the son of Florence Marie née Robertson and Ellis Marsalis Sr. a businessman and social activist. Marsalis and his wife Dolores Ferdinand Marsalis had six sons. The name needs no introduction to people who know music, and in particular, jazz music. From the more recognizable names of Wynton and Branford, to. A patriarch of gifted jazz musicians, Ellis is also the key to the family's fortitude, inspiration, and love for the music. A stellar musician in his own right Ellis has faithfully carried the torch, by performing, recording, as well as educating the public on jazz music. The event and ensuing concert celebrated Elliss retirement from the music faculty at the University of New Orleans and the establishment of a chair in his honor. Perhaps, this is a temporary station problem. You can leave your e-mail and we will let you know when the broadcast of the station will be online again: Or listen to the other country dec name stations. A family get together to play some music. All the brothers and their father are skilled jazz players. Probably the most interesting is the brother who plays the sax. He seems both the most fluent and the most searching, and his composition Cain and Abel is the most aggressive and spiky thing they play. But you have to see this album for what it is: a relaxed, blowing session, a live concert to mark Ellis Marsalis' retirement from teaching. Everyone sounds like they're enjoying themselves, and celebrating their father. But their limitations are shown on the version of St James Infirmary, one of the most covered pieces in jazz and blues
