This is a compilation from Chase's label which is definitely different - 16 cover versions from Hardcore Techno groups. The groups on this collection set out to cover songs well-known & obscure, the result of which is an original and varied collection of songs. SKREW bring strangled cartoon voices (probably unintentional) to the STONES' "Sympathy For The Devil" followed by a darkly intriguing cover of "White Rabbit" by DEATH METHOD - in total contrast to each other. There are fairly straight covers here - KMFDM's "Mysterious Ways" & BLUE EYED CHRIST's "Obsession" for instance, while people like XORCIST maul & mutate "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and SOCIETY BURNING gives "Stand And Deliver" a dignity & excitement the original lost with ANT's slavering for lucre and acceptability. After PSYCHIC TV's pale straight cover of "Good Vibrations", FLESHOUSE deserve a special reward for taking the original weirdness a few steps further - bizarre, surreal & totally in tune with the atmosphere of the original. What's good here is that groups who often have an interesting sound but dubious talents in the songwriting field are given already-established classics and have only to inject their own sound, which can only bring their strengths (and in a few cases weaknesses) to the fore. As a coda, I must say it was surprising to see two MADONNA covers here - her Iconic status must touch most cultural areas in the U.S. It's overall a good album - large areas of strong, addictive music with a few blighted corners of songs beyond redemption. Obviously those who like this area of music will find it a worthwhile collection - but it's appeal should stretch far wider.
